Kathmandu: The teaser for the movie Karsang is set to be released in a few days. The film stars Dayahang Rai, debut actress Srijana Ningale, Jitu Nepal, Diya Maskey, and others in key roles.
Based on the posters and images released so far, the specific roles of the characters remain undisclosed. However, a poster featuring village-themed characters and a leaked shooting image suggests a rural setting.
A leaked image from the set featuring Dayahang Rai and Srijana Ningale hints that Dayahang might portray a Dhami (a traditional shaman). However, the equal emphasis on Jitu Nepal and Dayahang Rai in the posters adds ambiguity about who holds the primary role.
If Dayahang Rai plays the lead, with a character as a Dhami, this film might redefine the idea of a “hero” in Nepali cinema. For years, the concept of protagonists has shifted, with character actors being celebrated as heroes. Karsang could further this trend, emphasizing that heroes don’t need to be wealthy, glamorous individuals. Instead, they can represent grounded, everyday people, making room for more authentic narratives in Nepali cinema.
Set to release on January 10, Karsang marks Yam Sherpa’s debut as a writer and director. The film draws inspiration from the culture and traditions of the Sherpa community. Alongside Dayahang Rai, the cast includes Srijana Ningale, Jitu Nepal, Diya Maskey, Buddhi Tamang, Srishti Gautam, Doma Hyolmo, Prem Lopchan, and Surbir Pandit.
Produced by Yarsa Films and Purushottam Pradhan Films, the movie features Purushottam Pradhan as both the cinematographer and the producer. Co-producers include Govinda Bohora, with Angchiring Sherpa as the executive producer and Birendra Shahi as the line producer.
The international distribution rights have been acquired by Hulya Events’ Suman Parajuli and Somlal Thokar, while RR Films will handle domestic distribution.
